What to expect from counselling

What is counselling?

Whether we’re working with individuals, couples or families, counselling takes place in a safe and confidential space. It gives an opportunity to talk about your problems and the way in which these affect you as an individual and/or others in your family.

You might talk about difficult or traumatic events in your life or your relationships and the feelings you may have. Or you might be struggling with negative thoughts and behaviours that you want to change.

Counsellors will not give you advice or solve your problems for you. They also won’t judge or be critical of you. Instead, they’ll listen to your story, helping you to understand yourself (and others) better and choose to make those changes that matter most to you.

Our approach

All our counsellors are trained professionals and you can ask questions about any part of the work they do. The assessment session/s help to be clear about who should attend the counselling sessions. Sometimes the best choice is to work with one member of the family and other times a whole family approach is the best option.

Feedback

We’re always looking at how we can improve our service and will invite you to feedback on your experience of counselling and if/how you think it’s helped you. With your permission, and your name and situation anonymised so you can’t be identified, we may want to use your feedback to tell others about Platform for Life.
